Forget the “first robin of spring”. Spring comes early to the southeast United States, and insects are one of the first wild animals to make an appearance as soon as the temperatures warm.

This particular insect was hanging out on the wall of a shed and didn’t seem to mind my attention.

It is a species of true bug (order Hemiptera) in the leaf-footed bug family (family Coreidae). The family name comes from the leaf-like dilations on their hind legs but L. oppositus doesn’t have a common name.
