How To Identify Halloween Pennant Dragonflies

  • Halloween Pennant dragonflies grow to:
    • 1.7 inches (42 mm) total body length.
    • 1.3 inches (34 mm) hind wing length.
  • Mature males have:
    • Two-toned eyes; red-brown above, gray-green below.
    • Red faces.
    • Orange-brown thoraxes with black stripes.
    • Black abdomens with wide, lengthwise orange stripe on top.
    • Orange wings with:
      • Broad, dark brown bands that fill their wings from front to back.
        • Both the fore- and hind wings are banded near the nodus and pterostigma.
        • Forewings have an additional band at the wing base.
        • Hind wings have two additional bands near the wing base.
      • Orange-red wing veins.
      • Red pterostigmas.
      • Wings look like stained glass, especially when backlit.
  • Mature females and immature males have:
    • Yellow thoraxes
    • Yellow pterostigmas.

  • Look for them in open fields and meadows around lakes, ponds, marshes, and along their banks.
